Making your time as a student count. Third years.

This is the year to really think about your career and what you’re going to do after graduation. Use every aspect of what the Careers Service offers and especially try to get a professional internship during the Summer.

Have a look at yesterday’s post “making your time as a student count” for first and
second years. If you haven’t done the stuff on there, pick out a few quick wins and action them straight away.

Have a Long Hard Think

Third year is a great time to figure out what you want to do when you graduate, so really use this year to think, reflect, research and evaluate ideas about what you’re going to do after graduation. If you don’t know where to start? Don’t worry, we are here to help!

  •  A good starting point is the Career Planning pages on our website
  • Use Prospects Planner, a tool that helps you find out about job options that would suit you – it’s not a magic tool but will match your skills and personality to their job profiles – it might give you a few ideas!

Talk To Us

Really engage with the Careers Service and all we are doing for you: Careers Guidance, Practice Interviews, Recruitment Fairs, Employer Talks and Workshops, Internship Hub, Job Vacancies Database, Course based sessions, Alumni engagement, Entrpreneurial support, Jobsearch skills: CV’s , Applications and Interviews. Don’t tell me that doesn’t sound good!

Build your Network

Networking can be daunting, right? Well it doesn’t have to be! If you got lost on campus (I do a lot!) it’s obvious that you’d stop and ask someone for directions, right? Well networking isn’t too dissimilar – if your not sure about an industry or a job role, ask someone who knows and our alumni have lots of insights to share. Did you know we have an online platform called the Network you can login to and connect with our alumni who are waiting to hear from you!

Keep Developing Skills and Your CV

Keep recording your experiences and reflecting on the skills you are developing. Look at what you’ve done so far and if you identify a gap in your experience now is the time to make moves to fill it.

Use Your Last Summer Wisely

Employers are using internships as a way to fill graduate roles so get ahead of the game and get some experience!

Plan Ahead to Next Year

For many employers and postgraduate courses the closing dates are in semester 1. So be aware of that and make applications early.

Till next time, your Careers Adviser for Arts, Ann Duff
